Selling yourself to a new construction firm can be a nerve-wracking experience. There are those times when you might believe that you aced an interview, except you really didn’t, and vice versa. Since there are so many different variables at play, sometimes it’s better to focus more on the things that you can control. It’s common for candidates to make mistakes during a construction interview. A smart rule of thumb is to learn from those mistakes and keep moving forward. Here are four embarrassing interview mistakes that you should avoid making in your next job change.

1. Dressing Inappropriately

If you’re being considered for a construction job in a professional setting, then dress to impress with appropriate attire. A common mistake that candidates make is automatically assuming that business casual wear is good enough for any construction interview. You can always inquire about the company’s dress code prior to the interview. But a rule of thumb is to dress nicer than the company’s dress code for the interview. Generally speaking, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

2. Being Late

You only get one chance to make a first impression, so make it count by arriving early to the interview. Most hiring managers view tardiness as a blatant sign of disrespect. You are automatically putting yourself in a better position to receive an offer just by being on time or a bit early. Don’t arrive too early though; if you are 15 minutes early for your interview, take a quick walk or sit in your car until closer to the time so you don’t throw a wrench in their plans.

3. Being Distracted

This should go without saying, but there are still candidates who think that it’s perfectly acceptable to text, answer calls, check social media, etc., during an interview. Obviously, construction hiring managers aren’t going to believe that the job is your main priority if you’re distracted. Ditch the mobile connection and connect with the person interviewing you; turn your phone off or leave it in the care altogether.

4. Following a Script

Since you don’t know what is going to be asked, learning how to improvise during an interview can be effective. Knowing how to do the job that you’re being considered for is just a small piece of the puzzle. Most construction firms also want their employees to become brand ambassadors too. Research the history of the company, mission statement, locations, recent projects, etc. Be prepared to share how familiar you are with them. Be present and don’t make the mistake of trying to follow a script.

Another common mistake job-seekers make is to criticize their former employers during an interview. Resist the urge. Although it can be difficult to talk about past bosses neutrally, it’s important to show that you are able to work well with others, and handle conflict in a mature manner. Be prepared and avoid these four embarrassing interview mistakes. Keep the conversation as professional as possible to achieve a successful outcome.
