in-demand construction jobs

With Ohio’s economy booming and companies expanding throughout the state, the demand for skilled construction workers is skyrocketing. Currently, over 245,500 Ohioans work in construction—about 1 in every 23 workers—and there’s room for more.

Why Construction Could Be the Perfect Fit for You

Construction is more than just a job—it’s a chance to shape the future of Ohio. As companies build new sites, roads, schools, and hospitals, skilled tradespeople are in high demand to make these projects a reality.

With a current average salary of $72,000 for skilled workers who complete apprenticeship programs, construction offers financial stability and room for growth. And with at least 20 in-demand roles—such as electricians, carpenters, welders, and operating engineers—the options are vast and varied.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine highlights how critical this field is, saying, “There are incredible opportunities right now in this field, and we appreciate all of the hardworking Ohioans in construction jobs today who are literally building our state’s future from the ground up.”

Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted echoes this, encouraging Ohioans to explore what the industry has to offer. “Businesses constantly need construction workers,” Husted says. “I encourage everyone looking for a new or better opportunity to see for themselves what the industry can offer them.”

Apprenticeships: A Path to a High-Paying Career

One of the best parts of starting a career in construction is the availability of apprenticeships. Apprenticeships allow you to earn a paycheck while learning hands-on skills from experienced professionals. This “earn while you learn” model means you can enter the workforce without taking on student loans. When your program is complete, you’ll be ready to step into a role with an average annual salary of $72,000 and great potential for advancement.

This year, Ohio has taken further steps to guide students toward careers in construction. School counselors from grades seven to 12 are now required to complete training in building and construction trades career pathways. This initiative aims to equip counselors with the knowledge to inform students about career-focused options, including apprenticeships, that offer stability, good wages, and a clear career path.
